Shangri-La
Doris Duke drew inspiration from the Islamic water gardens, palaces, and tombs of the Mughal empire, first seen on her honeymoon in 1935. She was especially taken by the design of the Taj Mahal. In this portion of Shangri-La, you can see the concepts adapted to a swimming pool (an 18 foot high dive could be raised with an Otis elevator mechanism) and pool house. Diamond Head is in the background, although from an unfamiliar angle.
